Plantation Primary School in Halewood has been awarded the British Council’s prestigious International School Award in recognition of its work to bring the world into the classroom.
The International School Award celebrates the achievements of schools that do exceptional work in international education. Fostering an international dimension in the curriculum is at the heart of the British Council’s work with schools, so that young people gain the cultural understanding and skills they need for life work in today’s world.
Plantation’s international work over 2017/18 included month long activities during Black History Month, writing Christmas cards to their partner school in Le Portel, France, recycling over 2200 batteries, designing flags for each Patron Saint of the United Kingdom, celebrating Chinese New Year, taking part in sports from different cultures during sports day including Kabbadi and Oodama Okuri, studying books from around the world during World Book Day, attending an ‘arts in a multicultural society’ residential and much more.
Furthermore, in October 2018, Plantation took a group of 30 children abroad for the first time in their 50 year history, visiting Notre Dame Cathedral, Musee du Louvre, Place de la Concorde, Brie Compe Robert market, Disneyland Paris.
The international co-ordinators at Plantation Primary School have been invited to the International School Award celebration at the House of Parliament, London, on Wednesday 5 December to be presented with their certificate.
On hearing the news that Plantation Primary School had received the award, headteacher, Mr Hanley said: “This is great news for our school and recognition of the strides we have made in a short space of time to enhance our curriculum through international work.
“We have developed our learning on culture and diversity with our children immensely. Through the ideas and training staff have received, we are able to support our children in becoming global citizens and further develop the international learning that we believe will benefit our children.”
Sir Ciarán Devane, CEO of the British Council, said: “The school’s fantastic international work has rightfully earned it this prestigious award.
“The International School Award is a great chance for schools to demonstrate the important work they’re doing to bring the world into their classrooms.
“Embedding an international dimension in children’s education ensures that they are truly global citizens and helps prepare them for successful lives and careers in an increasingly global economy.”
The award is now available worldwide in countries such as India, Sri Lanka, Egypt, Lebanon, Cyprus, and Pakistan. Around 5,500 International School Awards have been presented to successful schools in the UK since the scheme began in 1999
