Merseyside Police are appealing for information following an act of criminal damage in Kirkby on the evening of Monday, 5 November.
At around 7.10pm, officers patrolling the area saw a fire in Memorial Park. The fire caused damage to the play area where swings and a slide were destroyed. Merseyside Fire and Rescue attended at the scene and the area was made safe before officers carried on with their patrol.
A group of youths, all dressed in black, were seen in the park at the time of the fire before it was extinguished.
Community Policing Inspector Phil Mullally said: “We are making enquiries to establish the circumstances of this incident but it initially appears to be a deliberate, and may I say disgraceful act of vandalism, which has destroyed part of a popular local attraction.
“To destroy a children’s play area in this way is completely unacceptable and very upsetting for local children who have woken up to a mess rather than a beloved place to play.
“I would urge anyone with information or who witnessed anyone acting suspiciously in the area of Memorial Park last night to come forward with any information as soon as possible. We are determined to find those responsible and put them before the courts.”
Anyone with information is asked to contact the social media desk @MerPolCC, call 101 with reference number 1056 of 6 November, or you can call or the independent charity @CrimestoppersUK anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
